The SoberTides Academy

When drinking stops making sense,
understanding comes first.
Then action becomes possible.

A structured program helping men gain clarity, experiment with change and decide their relationship with alcohol on their own terms.

When Your Drinking Stops Making Sense

For most men this doesn't happen overnight. Life continues working on the surface. Career intact, family looked after, responsibilities met. But gradually drinking begins to feel less like a choice and more like something that simply happens.

You might notice one drink quietly becoming several without quite deciding that's what you wanted. Or promising yourself you'll take a break and then drifting back into the same pattern a few days later. The mornings start feeling a little heavier than they used to. And somewhere in the background a quiet question starts forming — whether alcohol still fits the life you actually want.

Nothing dramatic has happened. But something no longer feels quite right.

That moment, the one where you start noticing rather than just doing, is where everything begins.

Why trying harder rarely works

Here's why. Most men are taught that managing alcohol comes down to discipline. Drink less. Set rules. Be stronger next time. And for a while that approach can work, which is exactly why it's so easy to keep returning to it.

But alcohol influences the brain's reward and habit systems in ways that quietly shape behaviour over time. The pull isn't a character flaw or a lack of effort. It's the predictable result of patterns that have been building for years, often decades, beneath the surface of daily life.

When those patterns become established, willpower alone creates an exhausting cycle. You push hard, things improve, life gets busy or stressful, and the same habits quietly reassert themselves. Not because you failed, but because effort without understanding only ever gets you so far.

The SoberTides Academy starts somewhere different. With understanding. Because when you see clearly how alcohol actually works, what it does in the brain and body and why the pull persists, the cycle starts to lose its grip. Not through force but through clarity.

Understanding Alcohol.
Then action becomes possible.

What you’ll understand inside the Academy

The Academy isn't built around rules, challenges or tracking your progress against a target. It's built around perspective,  the kind that makes alcohol look different without requiring you to fight it.

Across the courses you'll develop a clear understanding of how alcohol actually works in the brain and body, how drinking patterns form gradually over time and why they're so resistant to willpower alone. You'll begin to see the subtle ways alcohol influences mood, stress and the brain's reward system and why so many men find themselves caught between wanting to cut back and fearing what giving it up might mean.

Most importantly you'll start to understand why the cycle keeps returning and what actually breaks it.

The individual course pages cover the full detail of what's inside each module. But the short version is this: by the time you've worked through the Academy material, alcohol tends to look considerably less powerful than it did when you started.

The goal isn't to tell you what decision to make. It's to make sure that whatever you decide, it comes from clarity rather than habit, confusion or fear.

The SoberTides Academy Pathway

The Academy combines structured learning with optional coaching support, designed to move you through understanding and into action at a pace that suits you.

If you’re new to SoberTides, the easiest way to begin is by following the natural progression below.

Step 1 - Start With Understanding

Begin with the Free Guide: When Drinking Stops Making Sense.

This short PDF explains why alcohol can start feeling confusing and why willpower alone rarely delivers lasting change.

It introduces the thinking behind the Academy and helps you begin noticing the patterns that keep so many men stuck.

A good place to start before deciding anything else.

Step 2 - Deepening your Understanding

Next, work through the Men’s Guide to Drinking Less.

This 8-module course explores how alcohol shapes habits, beliefs and decision making over time.

You'll learn how alcohol affects the brain's reward system, why persistent drinking patterns form and how to begin seeing your relationship with alcohol for what it actually is.

By the end, action starts to feel possible in a way it rarely does through effort alone.

Step 3 - Action.
The 30-Day Breakaway Experiment

The Men’s 30-Day Breakaway Experiment is a guided 30-day experience where you take action, step away from alcohol and observe what changes.

Rather than a rigid challenge, the experiment builds on the clarity gained in the Men's Guide to Drinking Less and helps you take action and experience life without alcohol.

At the end of the experiment you can decide what role it should play going forward.

Optional - Coaching Support

Some men choose to move through the courses independently.

Others prefer the additional support of one-to-one coaching.

Coaching sessions provide space to explore your patterns, insights and goals as you move through the Academy material.

Courses and coaching can be taken independently or combined as a bundle.

The best way to work out a plan of action is to book a Free Strategy Call with me to discuss.

Learning Your Way

Not everyone comes to this kind of change the same way and the Academy is built to reflect that.

Some men prefer to work through the courses privately and at their own pace, building understanding before deciding whether any further support would help. Others find that having a conversation alongside the learning makes the difference between knowing something and actually applying it.

You can start with a course and add coaching later. You can combine both from the beginning. Or you can come straight to coaching if you've already done the reading and are ready to go deeper. There's no single right path and no pressure to follow someone else's.

Each course also includes a community space where you can ask questions, share what's coming up and learn from the experience of other men working through the same material.

If you're not sure where to start, a Free Strategy Call is the simplest way to work that out. No pressure, no obligation. Just a conversation about where you are and what might actually help.

You're also welcome to reach out directly at coachtony@sobertides.com if you'd prefer to start there.

The Outcome

The Academy is designed to give you something most approaches to alcohol never offer:

Perspective.

Not a programme to white knuckle through or a label to carry. Just a genuinely different way of seeing alcohol and the role it's been playing in your life.

From that perspective comes clarity. From clarity comes the possibility of real change. And once you've experienced that change, even briefly, you have something that willpower alone could never give you.

The ability to choose your relationship with alcohol consciously rather than simply going along with it automatically.

That's what the Academy is built around. And it's available to you whenever you're ready to start.

Your guide through the program courses

Tony Richardson

I spent decades negotiating with alcohol before I understood what was actually happening. I tried willpower, white knuckled it for nearly nine years and still ended up back where I started.

What changed things wasn't more discipline. It was understanding. Once I saw clearly how alcohol works in the brain and body, and how much of my thinking it had been quietly doing for me, the pull of drinking just stopped making sense.

That's the understanding I bring to every course and every coaching conversation inside the SoberTides Academy.

Not just the methodology, but the genuine experience of what it feels like to be where you are right now and what it feels like on the other side.
